my lawyer friend

my lawyer friend

Noong December of 2006, inimbitahan ako ng isa kung kumpare sa Sta Ana Manila for a birthday. Kain. Inom. Yes inom. I'll talk about inom more than the kain.

Lawyer: So Kris, I heard you're from Baguio (English kasi medyo sosyal
na party to)

Kris: Opo.

Lawyer: Oh, maganda dun, malamig. Last month may conference kami dun. Paubos narin mga Igorot dun ano?

Kris: Huh?

Lawyer (He pressed on, imagine that): Kasi parang iilan nalang nakita namin sa Botanical Gardens e. May mga pictures nga kami e. How about you, may kakilala ka pa ba dun na Igorot?

Kris: My mader dear and pader dear.

He stood up, apologized, offered me more drinks, gave his card and promised to help on legal matters and as we both got drunk we discovered more common things about us.

Dahil nalasing ako noong pauwi kami, I tripped sa parking lot and accidentally pushed a ladder. It fell and smashed the windsheil of a brand new mercedez benz. Nobody saw me but being a good citizen of this
beautiful country, iniwan ko calling card ko and a note.

Kinabukasan, tinawagan ako ng insurance agent nung may ari ng benz. Damage will cost around 68 fucking thousand pesos!

Then I remembered my new lawyer friend. So I asked if there is way for me to atleast lower my liability or even escape the damages. After I gave the details including the letter from the insurance Company, he blushed
as if his pants got tightened and said:

Lawyer: Anak ka ng pukingina ka, akin yun e!

movies and tears

Kahapon, that was Sunday, dumaan ako sa Makati Cinema Square to buy guitar strings (we'll talk about music sa ibang kuwento) when I saw pirated DVDs being sold for only 30. kahit maliit lang ang suweldo ko at ang pagtitipid is a must, pumunta parin ako dun sa shop na yun at tumingin tingin (sa DVD at hindi sa sales lady-para sa mga readers na malilikot ang mind gaya ni Joey deLeon).

And right there and then I saw a copy of Land Before Time. "Oh my God" sabi ko. This movie made me cry when I was small (until now small parin ).

So I got a copy after hustling with the nice sales lady to sell it for 15 pesos ("tangina kang igorot ka!" sabi siguro nung saleslady) Buti nalang guwapo ako.

Tuwang tuwa ako kasi nakaisa nanaman ako. ("Peste, get outa here!" sabi siguro niya pagtalikod ko)

"Men, uwi kayo agad, may magandang movie tayo ngayon. Guaranteed tearjerker" and sabi ko-sa text (tipid nga e).

(If you're interested pumunta kayo sa Pier, they have an array of Panasonyas, Sonya, and other sikat na brands na wrong spelling and tatak-for a reasonable price)

This is it.

We ended up watching Homerun, a Singaporian adaptation of Iran's Children of Heaven. It made us cry.

flight 101

February 6 2003. My birthday and first flight ko sa boung 22 years ng buhay ko.
Especially pag
sa mga maraming beach. Oh I miss my beyahe days. Anyway, so yun nga ang first na plane ko. And it was my birthday. Mabait ang boss ko.

So andun na ako sa loob, oh cyet I've been smiling for 4 hours now. Pagpasencyahan nyo na, laking bundok kasi ako kaya this was really something sakin and relax, we'll talk about my childhood days later.

So yun the ignorant Igorot finally got into a plane and he just can't wipe that stupid grin off his face.

Ako: Eto na eto na eto na…..lilipad na Lord (in my mind siyempre. Hindi ako addict for Christ sakes)

Nung nasa taas na kami, lumapit yung stewardess sakin.

Stewardess: Water or juice?

Ako: "Ahm…(tumingin tingin muna ako sa paligid ko and secretly cheked if may money ako sa left pocket). Water only po."

taglish

Siguro nagtataka kayo kung bakit taglish ako magsulat. Well actually sa totoo lang, eto kasi uso ngayon e. Parang cellphone if you get my drift.

" Kris ikaw ba yan? Oh My God!! Ikaw nga. At nagsusulat ka narin? Diba bobo ka dati? Wow this is something!"

Nung highschool kasi ako, in the words of our prinsipal, "Kris, you had the lowest score in the just
concluded (adjusts her grandmother eyeglasses) common examinations, do you have problems?"

Principal: 67?! You got 67% in Filipino, whats the matter with you?
Ako: We don’t speak Pilipino at home, we are Igorots, we prefer English maam.

She was furious. Todo as in.

Nanginginig ako nung pauwi ako pero guess what happened? Habang palubog ang araw, dumidilim and kumakain kami, my beloved pader dear said:

Natutuwa ako na marunong ka lumaban but what happened kanina was not good. Next time be nice. (taglish din ang pader dear ko)

That’s it. And it changed me since then. Habang kumakain kami, I felt the pure love of a father.
Simple lang siya mag advice and he never laid his hands on us siblings. He's the coolest taglish dad in the
world.

kumpare

Kasi sa Baguio, ang tawag namin ay godfather or godmather (kasi nga sosyal ang ciyudad namin, and you might not bilivit, but
our flowers listen to classical music para maganda ang pagbloom nila- research on this if you think I'm making it up).

Mike: Pare!! (waves with his right hand and beer on his other hand)

(with the right hand waving and the left hand holding a cold bottle of beer) napoprocess sa utak mo ang "tagay muna tayo nak ng,antagal nating hindi nagkita a?" (kahit araw araw kaming nagiinuman).

That is true brothers and sisters, in my case.

laundry shop

What's funny about napapaplaundry is that minsan nagkakaroon ka ng freebees. Yes freebees. I swear this is paking true.

One time naman may panyo akong bonus. Maganda siya kaso may nakalagay, "from your love, Edward".

What do I do with these freebees? Iniipon ko. At the end of the year binabalik ko sa shop, when owners finally get reunited with their long lost underwares, socks and even comforters (imagine!), they start to believe in God kasi its Christmas time and they found something they thought they lost. Hehe. I'm bad.

three wheels

November 8 2002.

Pagdating ko sa Manila to take our oath (kasi nachambahan kong pumasa sa CPA exam), I was amazed by how may traysikel there were. I have never in my life saw three wheels na ganun karami. We’ll I grew in a city na sosyal. Hehe. Wala kasing three wheels sa Baguio. I think it's the only city with no tricycle and allows FX to run as taxi.

It's a feat kung panu yun natin nagagawa. I even saw a picture of a cow and 2 goats take a traysikel ride-both naka smile pa! We'll this is the Philippines. The land of unlimited possibilities and countless innovations.

At eto pa, you get to ride with the whole family of the driver! It's a bonus I think, kasi you get to know where your ten pesos fare will go.

So nawiwili nga ako sumakay sa tricycle. Mausok nga lang.

It's a three wheel limo. Mamimiss ko mga tricycle when I finally decide to go back to Baguio for good.

the rent, the landlady and the dog

january 2003

Poochy no sabi! Poochy no! Pag may tira kang pagkain wag mong pakainin si Poochy kasi
KFC ang ulam niya (the what? come again?). Sentitibo yan. Diba Poochy Poochy ko, my love Poochy Poochy! Come Poochy Poochy.

And the dog is really huge!
After few months with the fact na mahal ang pagkain ni Poochy, I began to realize na kaya pala ganun nila kamahal si Poochy kasi si Ate Cora is not married and has no one to love but her oversized dog. I did't wonder anymore. In fact I admired her love for her dog. Pero KFC? One lucky son of a dog.

weekend

Since napadpad ako sa Makati, my life has changed. Dati pag weekend nung nasa Baguio ako, ang weekend ko dun starts with a cup of hot coffee at around 6 am while me and my brothers watch the eye poping sunshine. After breakfast (kadalasan karne with gulay or gulay with more gulay or just plain gulay), maghahanap kami ng aayusin sa bahay. Repair the fence. Plant more flowers, change the ladscape sa likod ng bahay, prune the trees-all habang naka sweeter or jacket. Pag gumagabi na, aayusin na ang bonfire dun sa top of the hill. Then over coffee or gin magkukuwentuhan kami magkakapatid. Then by 9pm tulog na kami. We never stay late kasi sabi ng pader dear ko, ginawa ni Lord na malamig ang Baguio para ma enjoy namin ang sleep (nice).

Ngayon dito sa Makati its different. I usually sleep at midnight. Minsan whole day tulog. And I never get to wear my sweaters and jackers except kung rainy season na. Oh the rainy season. It’s the worse time of the year.
Baha.
Lutang tae.
Langoy daga.
Baho kanal.
Lutang more tae.
More daga.
Pakcyet.
But I'm here and Im getting used to it. Dumarating nga yung time na pag nasa Baguio ako namimiss ko yung ingay and yung lifestyle.

Ang importante, atleast naka adopt narin ako sa fast paced competitive world nato. Whehe.

inuman

Dito sa Makati kakaiba ang inuman session. Naalala ko tuloy si Ramboo. Si Rambo ang lasengo
naming kapitbahay sa Baguio. Not sure kung buhay pa, kung hindi Godbless his dear soul, pero kung buhay pa, maswerte si Lucion Tan. Anyway another time ko nalang ikuwento si Ramboo.

Where was I? Ah, inuman session.

Bakit kamo? Kasi may tangero. For those hudasent
know what tangero is, siya yung matandang taga tagay (kaya nga tangero e) at nanginginig na ang kamay kasi siya yung tipong katorse palang e nagsimula nang uminom at naniwalang
ang paginom ng alak ay macho kaya…whatdapack, ..in short siya he's the most experienced drunk among the group. Yun ginulo ko lang.

Aside from that, pinapaikot ang baso. At lahat kayo hahalik dito! (At na feature narin ito sa Ripleys Believe it or Not).

Dapat siguro "kiss the glas" diba. Sosyal.

they consider me as family kasi mabait ako (ptoink). Kaya lahat ng okasyon niyayaya ako.

One time may birthday, so authomatic andun ako. That was Sunday (as if may relevance yung araw). So inuman session.

Flashback:

Mang Tado: Mali, mali kayo! (husky drunk voice with talsik of laway when he talks)
Ako: Bakit po
Mang Tado: Ang pusa hindi nagkaka angkit!

Yes, that’s us after excessive consumption of alchohol. We discuss anything under the roof of

One time we spent 5 paking hours arguing kung ano ang mas fresh, Nature's Spring or Wilkins.

"It's not hungover, it's Nirvana" (in English, laglag ako sa silya)

taxi

Paglabas ko sa bus terminal, nanibago ako. It looks chaotic.
Kaya ko to.
pupuntahan kong bahay, nagdesisyon akong mag taxi nalang.

Taxi driver: San kayo boss?

Ako: Sa 206 Constancia Street Olympia Makati City po. (ignorante pa, hawak ko pa yung paper)

Taxi: two fifty (hithit ng yosi sabay buga pagtingin sakin)

Ako: two ow six po. 8-2-0-6 constancia street.

Taxi: two hundred fifty pesos boy (with malademonyong tingin)

I can't believe it. I'm actually in Manila. So this is EDSA? Oh my. Andaming mga building. Antataas (with a stupid grin in my face).

Pagdating ko inabot ko 300 expecting for my change. Yun tinaga ako. Twice in just one sitting!
Damn taxi driver. Kulangot niya.

At that moment I already hated Manila and it's only my first day.

That night, nakahiga lang ako sa carton (this is real) kung kama (kasi nga kakarating ko lang) while
wondering what awaits me.

it starts with the first step

After ako pumasa ng board exam, lumuwas ako sa Manila to find work. Pagbaba ko ng bus this
were my first words:

"Paksyet! Ang init!" (sabay punas sa pawis at tangal ng jacket).

Natural reaction yan ng isang highlander na napapadpad sa hell. Oh, Manila pala.
Yun ang unang problema ko sa Manila. Mainit. Malagkit.
Laking Baguio kasi ako. Anyway, nahirapan ako during my first few weeks pero eventually,

At last. These is where my story begins.

bata, bata bakit nag accounting ka?

June 1998.

Tito ko: Accounting nalang kunin mo. Kita mo yang banko na yan?Dyan ka magtatrabaho
kapag nagtapos ka. We're talking bout money here Kris (sabay bou ng bilog using
his thumb ang forefinger).

Ako:Mag engineer nalang kaya ako, see that vacant lot over there? Tatayuan ko ng
malaking building yan, were talking bout legacy here. (bou din ako ng bilog
using my thumb and forefinger sabay kindat).

Eventually accounting din ang kinuha ko. I graduated but I did not work
And the vacant lot? Well, SM Baguio
na ngayon.
